Cox’s Bazar: Bangladesh’s Law Enforcement officers have detained at least 300 Rohingya refugees and 20 human traffickers over the past three months in Cox’s Bazar region.

On Saturday, the Border Guards Bangladesh stopped Malaysia-bound Rohingya refugees and arrested Bangladesh nationals and human traffickers in the Bay of Bengal.

The guards apprehended a fishing trawler carrying 22 Rohingya, seven Bangladesh nationals and three human traffickers at around 4am local time near Chera Dwip, St. Martin’s Island.

The arrested traffickers are identified as Md. Kabir, Md. Hossain and Md. Abdullah who are residents of Teknaf’s St. Martin’s Island.

A refugee under anonymity said, “After fleeing the mass killing and seeing the destruction of their houses in Myanmar, Rohingya refugees find themselves losing hope living in the camps under appalling conditions.

“Some refugees take the greatest risk of their lives in order to flee the trauma of living in the camps, coupled by the fear of forceful repatriation to Myanmar or the mass relocation to Bhasan Char in the Bay of Bengal.”

Over 1.3 million Rohingya refugees take shelter in numerous refugee camps in the region, which has seen influx of Rohingya over several decades as the results of ongoing genocide in neighbouring Rakhine State of Myanmar where the reports of widespread gravest crimes being committed by Myanmar Military.
