Teknaf, Bangladesh: Helal Uddin, 7, son of Jalal Uddin, block-C, shed # 274, of Leda camp (Tal) under the Teknaf police station was hit and killed by a speedy jeep nearby Aktel Tower of unofficial Leda camp (Tal) on March 15, evening, according to Jalal Uddin said.

Helal and other refugee children went Leda village to fetch drinking water after crossing Teknaf-Cox’s Bazar high way as the camp has no fresh water to drink. So, the refugee are depending on local village for fresh water. Helal was hit by a speedy jeep while he was crossing the highway road, according to refugee kids who were with him to fetch drinking water.

He was taken immediately to Teknaf government hospital from the spot after hearing the accident on the road by refugees, but he died on the way to hospital, according to Jalal Uddin.

Police went to the spot and seized the vehicle after getting information, but driver and helper ran away, said Harron, an aide of police.

The Rohingya refugees have been facing from the shortage of water since March 2013 because of the water dried up in the dam which was built nearby mountain side by Muslim Aids, Mohamd Hashim, a refugee committee member from the camp.

A refugee woman told the Kaladan Press Network (KPN), “Most of refugees are facing very difficult to find out fresh water for drink inside the camp. I am also afraid. the local youths will attack us during the fetching water from the locality. They (villagers) will also attack or rape our refugee girls and women in the locality.”

She also said that it was happened before while refugee women and girls went to local village for fetching water.
