Rohingya Action Ireland Welcomes ICJ’s Unanimous Verdict on Myanmar Genocide Against Rohingya

Press Release

January 23, 2020

Rohingya Action Ireland wholeheartedly welcomes the unanimous verdict from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against the actions of the Myanmar military and their genocidal acts against the Rohingya.

This order, by the ICJ follows Gambia’s application in November to the court, alleging the Myanmar military’s abuses in Rakhine State against the Rohingya minority, violate the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

The ICJ has ordered Myanmar to take steps to prevent further genocide and further atrocities against one of the most persecuted minority groups in the world. The ICJ recognises that the Rohingya are in need of protection.

This is a momentous and historic day for the Rohingya and all who fight to protect human rights.

Final justice for the Rohingya will take some time. Myanmar continues to deny genocide and whitewash the atrocious crimes being committed against the Rohingya.

The ICJ must remain vigilant to ensure that Myanmar complies with the ruling. It is up to each member state and supporter of human rights to support The Gambia in their brave and courageous move towards justice for the Rohingya.
